Lantern Tutorial

Welcome! I can’t believe how fast this summer is slipping by. Having all four of my grands home at once really keeps me busy, as well as dealing with health problems that are here to stay.  Blogging has kind of been put at the bottom of my daily list. Hopefully when school starts I will have more time to spend on my blog like I would like to. This year three of the four grands will be in school, so it will leave me with tiny who is really a breeze to tend.

I have been able to get some projects completed though and I will be sharing with you a tutorial on making hanging lanterns out of fabric. I made one as an incentive  for the girls to clean their bedroom.  But it is still hanging in my room, who knows I just my end up with it.lol

First of all I found the directions in July’s Romantic Homes Magazine. If you can’t understand my instructions then go to the magazine for help. One thing that I did not do being that the lantern is going in a child’s room was to omit putting in the lantern part inside. Candle’s and children in my house just do not mix.

The supplies you will need:

Fabric – depending on the size. I used one-third of a yard, it is quite long so if you want a little shorter one just cut back on the fabric. They really look cute in a group of three’s with different fabric and sizes. They can be used at parties, baby showers, wedding showers, afternoon tea’s hanging in a tree, so many fun uses.

Ring – can be a wooden embroidery hoop, metal ring (that’s what I used because I had it already) even a wire clothes hanger will work.

Embellishments – use your imagination. I wanted a Boho look so I went with trim that is quite dangly. See picture above.

Scissors, glue gun, fabric glue.

 

You can use fabric glue on the whole project if you wish, I used a sewing machine to sew the seam and adding the ribbon.

I glued the fringe on then sewed a white ribbon on the top of the fringe to give it a finished look. Now all of the embellishing is totally up to you. If you don’t use a border of some kind at the bottom then make sure you turn the ends under and glue or sew.

 

Next, with right sides together fold in half, sew or glue a 5/8 seam. Then iron open.

Now you are ready to insert your ring. At the top start to hold and glue the fabric over the ring.

I used clothespins to hold the fabric over the circle while glueing.

Now it’s time to add the handle. Divide your hoop up in fourths. (You can make these as long or short as you like). You will have two pieces of twine, ribbon, whatever you decide to use, glue and attach clothespins to each end. See picture above. Let dry. Then remove the clothespins.

You can use anything that you have on hand to use as a hanger, but if you want to have a candle in it I would use wire.

I used a glue gun to glue on the embellishments. This is the fun part. Make it you!

I used some fabric flowers and a fabric butterfly with a few rhinestone for sparkle.

Very Boho.

This lantern didn’t cost me a penny for I had everything on hand. I like that part. If you decide to make a lantern let me know how it turned out.
