I am so excited to introduce you to a lovely new piece that I picked up at my favorite second-hand store “Lost and Found”. I have a little vested interest because that’s where Anne’s Attic – design is set up.
It sure is hard to make any money when I end up doing a trade with my sales. lol (Smile) But that is okay because I have had a great need for the item that I am showing you today.
About a month ago I redecorated my granddaughters room and I gave them my sweet little antique dresser. So I was in need of something a little more adult size with more drawer space. I fell in love with this beautiful dresser with its tilting mirror and lots of drawer space.
I was told that it was owned by one of the old police chiefs here in Bountiful Utah. I looked at it more carefully when I got it home and it looked like at one time it might have been in a fire, which shows how a chief of police might have ended up with it. As I was wiping it down I was coming up with lots of black on my rag, and the back had some surface burns on it. Plus with some good authority my son the fireman said that was what had happened. The owners said that it dated around the turn of the century of the 1800’s. So I got a very nice piece with a lot of history.
Usually if I am uncertain about changing something on a piece I will let it sit and wait for that stroke of inspiration to hit. So far it hasn’t hit and I am quite pleased with the color in my bedroom, which I was for sure that I wouldn’t like.
What do you think? Should I paint it white or leave it?
In the pictures above I painted one of my sets of louvered doors a chippy pink. I thought this little corner would be fun to use to photograph items. Nothing like a little chippy pink to get my inspiration going. Plus it’s great to use for any backdrop. The book Wild Roses is a romantic novel written in the early 1900’s. This book was givien to my father from his parents for Christmas one year, it has some writing on the inside from them so it is special to me. I really can’t imagine giving my boys a romantic novel for any kind of occasion. lol I’m pretty sure that they would have thought I wanted them to get married and leave the house. lol I read the book in high school and shared it with many of my friends.
As you can see above I am infusing more florals into my life. I just thought I would share with you this sweet floral top with a lacy skirt and scarf. Now I just need some place to wear it. (IDEA STRIKES)

I definitely could never work in a store like this – or in a bookstore – or a craft shop – or a yarn shop. I’d be spending more money than I ever brought home in my pay check! To answer your question – I love your little dresser as it is, but I’m sure I would love it equally as much painted. How’s that for fence sitting?

I would leave the Bureau ‘As Is’, it’s Lovely and has a great back story. However, that said, if you felt it would be more cohesive with an aesthetic that leans towards painted upcycled furnishings then it has the great bones that would look fantastic in a colorless palette as well IMO. No fence sitting here!. You have a beautiful antique tiger oak dresser. And to know it’s history is a real plus. Not just something from a store. Why ruin it. You can paint any thing that’s not that nice.

Your new dresser is just GORGEOUS!! I would leave it as is…that way, your vintage pretty items show up and do not get lost against a white bureau!! Just my thought….

If you are considering re-selling it down the line, painting it may reduce the piece’s value. However, the burn damage may have already done that, so go ahead and use your paint magic on it! Can’t wait to see what you decide!

I like it the way it is, but if you had shown it painted I probably would have liked that too. Lot more trouble to unpaint than paint so I would probably leave it till it does not make you happy.

What a beautiful dresser! I love the history behind it too. I personally prefer painted furniture over stained natural wood, however, that piece is really nice just as it is. It’s in great shape. So, I would live with it a while until you make up your mind.

Jo, your new dresser is gorgeous! It is the same style as the one I used for the vanity in my basement bath. I did paint my teal, but it was birdseye maple and the veneer on the top was coming up. I would not paint yours. It’s beautiful as is, and I love the history!

It is a beautiful piece of vintage furniture. I know paint is the rage, but I love antiques such as this one with its beautiful grain left as is. Maybe a light coat of wax or varnish but nothing else.

I think it is gorgeous as it is! The wood grain is beautiful. If the finish wasn’t so nice or damaged, I would say paint it but I love it as is!
