A Thrifted Christmas

How many of us have wonderful memories of Christmas pasts?

When I think about Christmases as a child, I think of a 16 ft. tree  that almost reached to the ceiling and was filled with small stuffed animals and ornaments of every kind. My mom called it a nutcracker tree. Gold tinsel was wrapped around and around the tree with many sets of colored lights. One set of lights that I fell in love with was a small set of twinkle lights that mom strung from the balcony.  I would dream that they were the stars in the heavens and they memorized me as a child.

As an adult I followed many of the traditions that I grew up with as well as bringing many of my own into my Christmas decor and style. Mostly they were ideas of Christmases past.

  1. The Santa mugs remind me of my childhood! I loved when my mom made hot cocoa in them for me. Also, the red and white baker’s twine remind me of Scotto’s Bakery in Brooklyn, where we would go after church on Sunday’s and buy Italian pastries. I can vividly remember how we would pick out the pastries that would be placed in a white box, and then the lady would reach above and quickly and efficiently pull the twine around all four sides of the box and tie it in a bow and hand the goodies over to us! Funny how seeing such small items bring back such warm memories! Thanks!

  2. Jo, I too have such fond memories of Christmas’s growing up. Mom made them magical! Love your cute display with Santa mugs. I have two large ones that I picked up at a thrift and 11 tiny ones I got all for $1 at an estate sale. My grands love them. Hope you had a fabulous Christmas and Happy New Year to you my friend! Thanks for sharing with SYC.

    • Hi Jann, my Mom Christmas very magical as well and in turn I have tried to do that for my children and grands. I have found that spending time with them is so much more important to them than the gifts they receive. I had an amazingly happy Christmas and am excited for the new year and to new opportunities. Have a lovely New Year my friend. Hugs, Jo
