WELCOME! All of my blogging friends!
“Take this little thought from me, You are what I want to be, All the kindly deeds you do, You are the finest of the fine, Good, old loyal friends of mine.”
From: Romantic Prairie Style, Fifi O’Neill
I love Romantic Farmhouse style. It is embedded in my heart with its chippy furniture, soft beautiful colors, and rusty pieces. It brings me inspiring energy from days gone by.
Because I love old worn pieces so much I really try hard to replicate them. I don’t always see the wonderful patina on items that I like so I just tweak them a little bit. Today I want to share with you how I put a wonderful old patina on a new old hat box that I purchased from Good Will. You can use any sturdy box that you have.
Here is the sweet little box that I used. I wanted this to be a little on the French Nordic side.
I used these two colors of chalk paint, and Rust – Oleum decorative glaze in java brown and Vintage Market White Silk wax.
First I painted the whole outside of the box with the darker chalk paint first, then let it dry. Next, I brushed on the lighter color sparingly around the whole box. See the photos for example. The box had some glue on it and torn in a few places but this just added to the patina that I love. Then I brushed on the glaze around the edges and into any cracks or imperfections that I could see, then wiped it down with a wet rag. This really adds to the great rustic look that I love. I then let it dry really good.
After the box was good and dry I used some stencils that I bought from Amazon and went to work with a brown acrylic paint. I let that dry good, then used some fine sandpaper and sanded over the stenciling. The I used the wax all over the box, a little goes a long way. I had an old piece of rope that I threaded through the holes for the handle. I chose not to paint the inside because I liked it the way it was.
I was thrilled with how it turned out. Not only is it going to be fun for vignettes, but also for storing items.
You can use any box shape to re-purpose, as long as it is a nice strong sturdy box. I will be keeping my little stash of vintage lace in this box.
