Makings of a Shabby Tote

Welcome to Anne’s Attic – design! I hope that everyone had a great and safe weekend. The days are getting a little shorter and I can almost feel a little Fall in the air in the early mornings and evening.

I have been pretty busy the last couple of weeks. My daughter in law decided to take a much-needed leave of absence, so I have found myself with a lot of free time. I know it won’t last forever so I am taking advantage of the free afternoons that I have by doing some Junk’n and then refurbishing what I have bought. Let’s take a peek.

toe plan

I bought this great wooden tote at Good Will for a buck. Can’t beat that. It was never used and didn’t have a stitch of paint on it. Yeah! No sanding.

I gave it my distressing treatment, if you missed the tutorial that I did you can check it out here. I chose to use a pink and white chalk paint with some splatters of blue underneath.  The chippiness turned out perfect.

Then I applied vintage wallpaper on both sides. Here is a post that I did on applying the wallpaper to wood. Click Here.

I really like the look of the vintage wallpaper with the chippy pink paint. Now it’s ready to fill. Hum, what should I fill it with?

How about some vintage newspapers and music, a little lace and dried flowers?

Oh yes, I am loving this little tote . . .

I have seen a lot of this little totes at Good Will stores lately and they are really worth picking up and adding your little personal touches to them. This will most likely end up in my Etsy Shop if you are interested.

  1. Love the vintage wallpaper idea to decorate the caddy, which looks perfect against the chippy finish! I have a plain one that I keep remotes in, so thanks for the idea.

  2. I just love your distressing technique. I have an old door to distress and this is the easiest way I have found., Thanks for sharing it. The tote came out so beautiful and I love the way you styled it.

    • Thanks Ann Marie for your sweet comment. I think that this distressing technique is the easiest and gives the best results than I have ever found. I’ve painted a lot of pieces and I think I finally have it down. Let me know if it works for you. Jo

  3. Ya know I have an vintage, now totally beat up wooden tote I used to carry art supplies (brushes and paints) when I would go to a job site to faux paint and do murals. But your sweet “in the Pink tote” has left me happy. Sweet creation mon amie.

  4. Look at you! What a beauty you have created out of that simple tote, lovely just lovely. Of course the pretty doily just finishes it off. 🙂
I came by to visit from My dear Stephanie’s party, so glad I did.

    • Thanks Janice, you’ll never believe where I got this wallpaper from. A friend of my wrapped a package in it with a order from Etsy. I never throw anything out, especially if it is old and I can reuse it. But I have found some great rolls at Good Will. Just keep looking it will show up as you need it. Jo

  5. Great post, sometimes the simplest fixes are the most unique. The doily finishes it off so well. As far as GoodWill, I’m a regular –but i live in a ritzy area(I’m not ritzy) where people throw all but their children to the wayside and to GoodWill. Hospital auxiliaries are a good one too, shops for women’s shelters, besides I feel if I pay a bit more, it goes to a good cause. Smiles, Love this project.

  6. Of course you filled it just perfectly Jo! Love the vintage wallpaper, and what a bargain on the box. I keep my eyes out for wallpaper at the D.I. So far I have just found some blue check. I need to do something fun with it. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
